The climate and exposure in the French Pyrenees are conducive to the development of forests, up to relatively high altitudes. The » beech fir » is characteristic of the stage called » mountain » of 700-1800 m. In drier areas ( Capcir Valley Rioumajou above Saint Lary… ) , there are areas of Scots pine ; above , at altitude, where the woodlands give way to summer pastures , are the birch, mountain ash and pine hook and which dominate.
